How to choose a branding agency in New Jersey or NYC

By David Herskowitz, Founder and Creative Director

The types of branding agencies serving New Jersey and NYC, what each costs, the questions to ask, and when Splash Creative is and isn't the right fit.

CoverWhale brand guidelines spread by Splash Creative, for an InsurTech broker that streamlines trucking insurance.

By David Herskowitz, Founder and Creative Director, Splash Creative. Updated October 27, 2026.

Most "best agency" lists are written by an agency that ranks itself first. This isn't that. It's the checklist we'd give a friend: the kinds of agencies out there, what each is good at, what they cost, and how to tell in one call whether a team is right for you. That includes when it isn't us.

The four kinds of branding partners

Type Typical fee range Best for Watch out for
Freelance designer Usually less than a studio. No dollar range is published here. A first logo on a small budget No strategy phase. Capacity risk.
Local generalist studio Usually between a freelancer and a senior-led boutique. No dollar range is published here. Local businesses that need a logo, print, and a basic site Strategy is often thin
Senior-led boutique (Splash Creative is one) Brand identity from $15,000. Websites from $15,000. Brand strategy, identity, and website from $30,000. Startups and established companies that need strategy, identity, and a website from one team Smaller team, so book early
Large NYC brand studio Often six figures Enterprise and complex brand architecture Junior team after kickoff. Long timelines.

Splash Creative's row uses our published starting points. Fee notes for the other types are general observations about the kind of partner, not quotes from specific firms. This page does not publish a dollar range for them.

Seven questions to ask on the first call

  1. Who will actually do the work? Ask for names. At Splash Creative, David Herskowitz leads every project.
  2. What happens before design starts? If the answer isn't positioning, expect a logo with a moodboard taped to it.
  3. Is the price fixed? Hourly billing moves the risk onto you. Splash Creative agrees fixed scope and a fixed fee in writing.
  4. Can I see work for a company like mine? Same stage and buyer type, not just the same industry.
  5. Who builds the website? Handoffs between a brand agency and a web shop are where rebrands lose time and money.
  6. What do I own at the end? Working files, guidelines, and templates.
  7. What does launch look like? A planned rollout, not a logo dropped in a Dropbox folder.

NJ or NYC: does location matter?

Less than it used to. Most work happens remotely. Location matters for kickoff workshops and key reviews, where being in the room helps. Splash Creative is in Englewood, NJ, and meets NYC and NJ clients in person at those milestones. There is no NYC office.

  • You're a startup or an established company, and you need strategy, identity, and a website from one team.
  • You want the fee fixed in writing: brand identity from $15,000, websites from $15,000, or brand strategy, identity, and website from $30,000.
  • You want the founder in the room, not a junior account manager.

When we're not

  • You need a logo this week, or a first logo on a small budget. A good freelancer is the better call.
  • You need a media buying or performance marketing agency. We build brands and sites. We don't run ad spend.
  • You need a global, multi-brand architecture program with a 30-person team.

Where to look

  • Review sites: Clutch and Google reviews show patterns across many clients. Read the 3-star reviews too.
  • Case studies with outcomes, not just pretty pictures.
  • References: ask to speak with one client from two or more years ago.

FAQ

What is the best branding agency in New Jersey?

There's no single best. It depends on your stage, budget, and buyer. Freelancers suit first logos, local studios suit local businesses, and senior-led boutiques like Splash Creative (Englewood, NJ) suit startups and established companies that need strategy plus a website. Large NYC studios suit enterprise programs.

How much does a branding agency cost in NJ or NYC?

At Splash Creative, brand identity is from $15,000, websites are from $15,000, and brand strategy, identity, and website is from $30,000. Freelancers usually charge less, and large NYC studios often charge six figures.

Should I hire a NYC agency or a New Jersey agency?

Pick on fit, not ZIP code. Most of the work is remote. Proximity helps for in-person workshops.

What should a branding agency deliver?

A positioning statement, logo system, color, typography, guidelines, working files, and usually the website and launch assets.

How do I know an agency is senior-led?

Ask who presents the work and who's on the weekly call, and get names in the proposal.
