Outdated Law Firm Website Redesign in NYC: What Changes, What It Costs, and How Long It Takes

Written by David Herskowitz, Founder and Creative Director, Splash Creative. We redesign law firm websites across Manhattan and the five boroughs. This guide is written by someone who does this work, not someone aggregating advice.

Your Manhattan law firm’s website is costing you clients. Not because it’s broken. Because it’s outdated, and in a legal market as dense and competitive as New York City, an outdated site reads as an outdated firm. A prospective client comparing three or four firms before making a call will rule you out on the site alone, before ever reading an attorney bio.

Splash Creative redesigns law firm websites across Manhattan, Midtown, the Financial District, Brooklyn, and the outer boroughs. Custom redesigns with strategy, design, and copywriting from one senior team. David Herskowitz leads every project personally. Custom rebuilds run $20,000 to $55,000; most NYC law firm website redesigns are complete in 10 to 16 weeks. Talk to David about your firm’s site.

This guide covers what a real law firm website redesign in NYC actually costs, how long it takes, what a good agency changes that a template vendor skips, and how to tell if you need a full rebuild or just a refresh.

The Signs Your NYC Law Firm Website Needs a Full Redesign, Not a Refresh

A refresh (new colors, a new photo, a tweaked homepage) will not fix these problems. They require a structural rebuild:

  • Built more than 5 years ago and never structurally updated. The SEO architecture, mobile experience, and content model are wrong by current standards, no matter how good it looked in 2019.
  • Slow or broken on mobile. More than 60% of legal website traffic is now mobile. A desktop-first site built years ago is turning away most visitors before they read a word, and Google’s mobile-first indexing penalizes it in search too.
  • Practice areas aren’t structured as individual pages. A single “practice areas” page with bullet points is invisible to search and useless to a prospect trying to confirm you handle their specific matter.
  • Attorney bios are one paragraph with a stock headshot. In a market where the attorney is the product, a thin bio undersells the person the client is actually hiring.
  • You’re embarrassed to hand out the URL. This is the most honest signal and the most common one. If a partner hesitates before sharing the site with a referring attorney or enterprise prospect, the site is actively working against the firm.

What Actually Changes in a Law Firm Website Redesign

A genuine redesign changes structure, content, and conversion logic, not just aesthetics. That means: practice area pages rebuilt around how clients actually search, not how the firm bills internally; attorney bios rewritten to build trust rather than just list credentials; mobile performance rebuilt from the ground up rather than patched; local NYC and borough-level SEO architecture; and contact flows built to convert a motivated visitor instead of making them hunt for a phone number. A redesign that only changes colors and fonts is a reskin, not a redesign, and it won’t move any of the numbers that actually matter to the firm.

What Redesigning an Outdated Site Costs in NYC, by Vendor Type

Template-based legal website providers (Scorpion, FindLaw Design, Justia, and similar) run $3,000 to $10,000 and produce sites that are visually near-identical to hundreds of other firms using the same template library, fast to launch, but they can’t differentiate you in a market as saturated as Manhattan. Legal-industry-specialized web vendors that build from a proprietary template system sit in the middle, faster than fully custom, more distinct than a pure template, but still working from a shared visual and structural base across their client roster. A senior-led boutique doing a fully custom build, strategy, design, and copywriting from one team, runs $20,000 to $55,000 and produces a site with no structural resemblance to any other firm’s. Large digital agencies with in-house production teams run $75,000 to $200,000+ and are built for firms with complex multi-office structures or marketing departments that want an ongoing retainer relationship, not just a one-time redesign.

The right tier depends on what you’re optimizing for. If you need something live in three weeks and don’t care about differentiation, a template provider is a reasonable, honest choice. If the website is doing real business development work, competing for referrals against firms that already invested in a custom site, the template tier stops being competitive.
