Is Your Website Redesign Overdue? 8 Signs It’s Time to Rebuild

Most companies don’t decide to redesign their website because of a single bad moment. It’s slower than that: a competitor’s site starts looking sharper, a prospect mentions it in a sales call, or you catch yourself hesitating before sending your own homepage link to someone you want to impress. By the time it feels urgent, the site has usually been quietly costing you leads for a year or more.

Here are the specific signs that separate “could use a refresh eventually” from “actively losing you business right now,” plus what a redesign actually costs and how long it takes, so you can make the call with real numbers instead of a vague feeling.

The 8 signs your website redesign is overdue

1. You wouldn’t send it to a prospect you actually wanted to close

This is the simplest test and the most honest one. If there’s a flicker of hesitation before you share your own site with someone you’re trying to win over, your site is actively working against your sales process, not for it.

2. Your competitors’ sites look meaningfully more current than yours

Not different. Not “a matter of taste.” Meaningfully more current, in a way a prospect comparing three vendors would notice in the first ten seconds. Buyers use design quality as a proxy for company quality, fairly or not, especially in professional services, healthcare, and B2B, where there’s no product to touch or try.

3. Your mobile experience is an afterthought, not a first-class version of the site

If your site was built more than four or five years ago, there’s a real chance it was designed desktop-first and mobile was patched on after. Over 60% of web traffic across most industries is now mobile. A site that merely “works” on a phone, rather than being designed for one, is losing a majority of its visitors before they even see your value proposition.

4. You’re manually working around your CMS instead of using it

If updating a single page requires calling a developer, exporting to a designer, or avoiding the change entirely because it’s “not worth the hassle,” the platform itself has become the bottleneck. This is a structural problem a redesign fixes; a plugin or patch does not.

5. Your site was built for a business you don’t run anymore

Companies evolve: new service lines, a different ideal client, a repositioned price point. A site built for the company you were three years ago will actively misrepresent the company you are now, sending the wrong buyers to the wrong pages and no message at all to the right ones.

6. Your bounce rate and time-on-page have quietly gotten worse

Before assuming it’s a redesign problem, check Google Analytics. But if you see rising bounce rates on key pages with no clear cause (traffic source changes, seasonality), an outdated or confusing site experience is a common and underdiagnosed culprit.

7. You can’t remember the last time someone complimented it

Clients and prospects mention a great website unprompted. If you genuinely can’t recall the last time that happened, and you used to hear it more often, that’s a real signal, not a vanity metric.

8. Your site can’t support what your business does now

You’ve added services, SKUs, locations, or a new business line, and the site’s structure can’t accommodate it cleanly. You’re forced into awkward workarounds: a services page listing twelve things with no hierarchy, or a case studies section that hasn’t been updated in two years because there’s no clean way to add to it.

If two or more of these are true, the math almost always favors moving now rather than waiting. The cost of a redesign is fixed and predictable. The cost of an underperforming site compounds quietly every month it stays live.

What a website redesign actually costs

Real ranges, not lowest-common-denominator marketing numbers:

  • Template-based or freelance redesign: $3,000-$15,000. Fast, limited strategy input, best for very early-stage companies or simple sites with low commercial stakes.
  • Senior-led boutique agency (custom design, strategy included): $15,000-$75,000. This is where most established professional services firms, B2B companies, and founder-led businesses with real commercial stakes land. Strategy, custom design, and copywriting from one senior team, not a template with your logo swapped in.
  • Mid-size agency, larger team: $50,000-$150,000. More process, more people, typically more useful for complex sites with multiple stakeholders or product lines.
  • Enterprise-scale rebuild: $150,000+. Relevant for large organizations with complex integrations, multi-market requirements, or significant custom functionality.

Most companies asking “is it time” fall into the second tier. A redesign at that level typically runs 8 to 14 weeks from kickoff to launch, assuming timely feedback and no scope creep mid-project.

What to evaluate before you hire anyone

Whoever you choose, get clear answers on these before signing anything:

  • Who actually does the strategy work? A senior strategist involved through delivery produces a different outcome than a junior team executing a template after a senior person pitches you.
  • Is copywriting included, or a separate line item? A redesign with new visuals and the same tired copy solves half the problem.
  • Can they show a real before/after, not just a portfolio of finished work? The before state tells you whether they’ve actually solved this specific problem, an outdated site losing credibility, rather than just designed something new from scratch.
  • What’s the actual timeline, with milestones? Vague timelines are the leading indicator of scope creep and missed launch dates.
